Acrylic on nautical chart by Jennifer Winship Mark
The painting I created in the window at Muse Art and Design to benefit  Schoolhouse supply

It was very interesting painting at Muse the other day. Thanks  for all your feedback on what subject I should paint. It helped me to make the choice of painting in my "nautical chart" style.    I ended up painting a sailboat in the Humbolt Bay area in Northern California.  It was a fun experience painting in a public place with all the comings and goings of artists, children and characters.  The great part is I got to know Peter the very cool owner of Muse Art Supply. He is a really good guy with a lot of  art and people knowledge.
When you hang around someone's work place for 5 hours and listen to them interact with kids, parents, artists, employees, crazy phone calls and the occasional street lunatic, you find out what they are truly made of as a person.    Peter is an amazingly kind and incredibly knowledgeable artist that happens to own an art store.  He knows so much  about art supplies and techniques and he really listens to artists and their ideas so he can better help them through their creative process and encourage them along the way. It was a real pleasure hanging out as "living, breathing window display".  I learned a lot about artists and the business of dealing with  artists!
Check out the blog post that was created by an Art Institute student that hung out with me that day.The facts are a little "garbled ", but you will get the gist. You can also see the process of what I painted .
Beside sharing my painting techniques ,exchanging artistic ideas  and chatting with the varied  artists that came through the door  I actually got time to paint.  This is something I haven't done enough of lately.   I  secretly must admit the best part of my day at Muse was discovering some funky new art supplies  from Peter.  Hopefully many of these new ideas can be incorporated into some of   our upcoming Open Eye Art events.

If you are interested in checking out all the Artist A Day art then click here. There was some great art at great prices that auctioned off last week.  Hopefully next year you will get a chance to bid on some of the great art work.
If you happen to be hanging around the Hawthorne area and you  need some inspiration or just want to chat about creativity, stop by and say hi to
Peter ,  Hawthorn's nicest guy,at

Thanks for helping me out with your feedback,

Many of the Pacific Coast Charts I used for these pieces were in
the collection of Don Ritz .  Many were actually on his sailboat for
many years.

I Worked for 6 days solid and
finally finished my last 5 nautical chart acrylic paintings. I  first

aged the nautical charts, stamped, collaged, gold leafed, wrote and spattered all to give
a "depth" to the art piece.  I have become an expert on all sorts of obscure historical facts about the NW coast.  I have even discovered my ancestors came to Oregon before Lewis and Clark.  The Winship Brothers arrived in Oregon on the Albatross and tried to set up a fur trading fort, but it was unfortunately flooded out.
I always knew I belonged in the NW !  Now it is time to frame these 28 original works.

Turn of the century Gillnet Boats fishing the mouth of the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean.
These boats were known as the Butterfly Fleet.  They were efficient , graceful and  beautiful.

Amazing wall and shutters from a side street in Milan Italy.
Even the trashy blue tarp seen through the bars adds an element
of beauty to this composition.

This will soon be painted on top of one of my nautical charts.

Acrylic painting and collage on old nautical chart
by Jennifer Winship Mark
Hi all!! I am still around. Here is a large nautical chart I did to
commemorate a 5oth anniversary for a local business. This scene
is just off Vancouver Island on the 50th longitude.
Hopefully I can work something out with the amazing
Columbial River Maritime Museum . I am hoping to
show all 32 of my hand painted nautical charts in
one huge show. Now I just have to frame all of them!
It still is up in the air though.
I am open for any other ideas on where I can show all these Pacific Ocean charts??????

These are all part of a collection of 20 charts and 10 stillifes I have just sitting in my studio because I have been too lazy too contact galleries in the last year.

I took some new photos after reading an article in I'd Rather Be in The Studio . I realized some of the blurry crooked photos could be improved.
I am presenting these pieces to the Bronze Coast Gallery in Canon Beach Oregon.

Here is another finished nautical chart painted over with acrylic paint with some added collage elements

I originally did these pieces for the cruise industry. I think they should have great appeal to Northwesterners who love the coastal sports of fishing, sailing, canoeing and kayaking.

I can't imaging how daunting it would be to be sailing like this out in the middle of the pacific.
I included a small excerpt from a sailor's writing that I ran across.....
"Never take the fresh breath of the ocean for granted for the wind can vanish without the slightest hint of where it has gone" This is what is written in the cartouche at the upper left.

This stillife is surrounded by pages torn from the
Gray's Anatomy Book for Doctors.
I have been tearing up my book like a mad woman. I know this must bring great pleasure to many medical students that have spent years slaving over that thick and unforgiving book.

I love working with gold leaf. Laying the light as air leaves down onto my sticky ground is like catching a ghost in honey. I just contacted the master guilder Nancy Thorn to see if I could get some real instruction in this area. There is so much gorgeous art out there covered in gold leaf.
It is not as complicated as it seems, however to be a master like Nancy Thorn takes years.
